‘Oliver,’ ‘Willy Wonka’ to be presented locally

PEORIA – Two children’s theater productions are opening next weekend at local community theaters.

"Oliver," the musical based on Charles Dickens’ tale of Oliver Twist, is being staged by the Peoria Park District’s Community Children’s Theatre. Bryan Blanks is directing the show, which opens at 7 p.m. Friday at Peoria Players Theatre, 4300 N. University. The show continues at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Dec. 7. Admission is $10 for adults or $8 for children 12 and younger and senior citizens. For more information, call 681-2861.

The musical "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory Jr." is being staged by Corn Stock for Kids. Directed by Linda Grimson, it will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Dec. 12 and at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and Dec. 13 at the Corn Stock Theatre Center in upper Bradley Park. Thenhaus painting part of Charleston exhibit

GALESBURG - A painting by Paulette Thenhaus of Galesburg has been accepted into the Drawing/Watercolor: Illinois 17th Biennial Exhibition at Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Thenhaus’s painting is titled "Dark Side of the Mountain." The exhibition opens Dec. 14 and runs through Feb. 22.

 Sonata/sonatina contest planned

EAST PEORIA – The Peoria Area Music Teachers Association will hold its sonata/sonatina competition Feb. 7 at Illinois Central College.

Pianists participating in the festival will perform sonatas or sonatinas for judges during the morning and afternoon of the event. The competition will be judged by faculty from area colleges and universities. Awards will be presented to winners competing in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels on the day of the competition.
