Fogelberg memorial closer to reality

A group behind plans for a Dan Fogelberg memorial at Riverfront Park has waded through the red tape and is now kicking fundraising efforts into high gear.

Hugh Higgins, who is organizing the memorial effort, was recently able to secure space on two Dan Fogelberg Web sites, danfogelberg.com and thelivinglegacy.net, announcing formal plans to Fogelberg’s fan base. There also is a quick link for donations on the Community Foundation home page.

"We believe that these (postings) will get us to our goal very quickly," Higgins said.

The memorial honoring Fogelberg was approved by the City Council on May 26. The tribute will include landscaping, a tree and a group of natural boulders etched with Fogelberg’s lyrics.

Higgins said the project has secured $2,400 in pledges so far.

"With 14,000 people on the (Fogelberg) newsletter, if everyone sent a dollar, we’d be there," Higgins said. "But with the passing of time, maybe (the project) is not as dear to people’s hearts. In the difficult economic times we are in, any type of fundraising is a risky venture, but I believe his fan base is extremely loyal."

Higgins said while the Community Foundation account will be set up for two years, he hopes to have the memorial in place by August 2010.

Donations are tax deductible and will be managed by Community Foundation of Central Illinois. To donate, visit communityfoundationci.org or mail checks to Community Foundation of Central Illinois, 331 Fulton, Suite 310, Peoria, IL 61602.
